The escalated police operation came in response to violent clashes, localized arson, and projectile attacks in key hubs including Paris’s Place de la République and Marseille, where growing civil unrest continues to challenge President Emmanuel Macron’s government. Mobilized by surging inflation, high fuel prices, and mounting cost-of-living pressures, a broad coalition of high school and university students, trade unions, and “Yellow Vest” activists marched across the country. Despite daytime rallies remaining predominantly peaceful, municipal authorities enforced overnight blockades and strict curfews to preempt a recurrence of the severe rioting and commercial looting that devastated urban centers earlier in October.
