Two hours off the coast of Rio de Janeiro lies a place that feels like it’s been ripped straight out of Jurassic Park. Towering jungle-covered mountains rise from the ocean, with no roads connecting much of the island—only boats. But getting here wasn’t easy. It took three different boats to finally reach Ilha Grande, and with rough seas crashing against the shoreline, even finding a safe place to step off was a challenge. After a wet and nerve-racking landing, we finally made it. Now it’s time to explore one of Brazil’s most breathtaking islands, from its abandoned prison to the remote communities hidden deep within the rainforest.
