He never broke a single rule. He just won world championships in languages he doesn’t speak.

This is the true story of Nigel Richards — the quiet New Zealander many players call the greatest Scrabble player who has ever lived. He picked up the game at 28, after his mother gave it to him to stop him counting cards. Then he became world champion in English five times.

In 2015, he did something that sounds impossible. He spent about two months studying the French word list — without learning to speak French — walked into the French-language World Championship, and won it. Native speakers who had used those words their entire lives lost to a man who couldn’t hold a conversation in it.

In 2024, he did it again. In Spanish. In his first-ever official game in Spanish, he went on to lose just one game out of 24 and took the title from the defending champion.

He says there’s no secret. “Learn the words.” But is that really all it is? Is it a photographic memory? Is it something nobody has figured out yet? And how does the best player in history end up with only around $200,000 in prize money for his entire career?
