Jacobson wasn’t an outsider who broke in. He was the man McDonald’s trusted to keep the game honest. At Simon Marketing, the promotional agency behind McDonald’s Monopoly, he built the security protocols himself — the tamper-proof seals that shattered if removed, the pocketless shoes for floor workers, the rule that no employee was ever alone with a winning piece. As one FBI agent put it after the trial, he was the fox guarding the henhouse — except he’d written the manual telling the farmers how to catch a fox, so he already knew every trap in the field.

His whole scheme came down to one gap he alone could see. The winning game pieces travelled in a locked briefcase, with an independent auditor flying beside him to make sure it never left his sight. She watched the seal when they boarded and when they landed. What she couldn’t do was follow him into the men’s restroom on a layover.

Inside a stall, in under four minutes, Jacobson would cut the tamper-proof seal with an X-Acto blade, pull out the million-dollar piece, replace it with a worthless “free fries” piece, and reseal it with an identical sticker he’d ordered from a Taiwanese supplier — a purchase Simon Marketing itself approved and paid for. The auditor waited outside the door. McDonald’s never knew.

Then he built a network of proxies — a stepbrother, friends, acquaintances, all in different states with different surnames — to mail in the pieces, pass McDonald’s name checks, hold the giant novelty cheques, cry on national television, and wire back his cut in cash. Every heartwarming McDonald’s winner commercial that aired in prime time for over a decade featured someone hand-picked by the man controlling which pieces entered the game.

The operation grew until it reached the Colombo crime family, spiraled on a god complex, and was finally undone by a single anonymous phone call that launched the FBI’s Operation Final Answer. In one of the strangest details of the whole case, Jacobson even investigated his own crimes on McDonald’s behalf — and cleared his own name, in writing, on corporate letterhead.
