This is the true story of Robert William Fisher — the 475th person ever placed on the FBI’s Ten Most Wanted list, who spent 7,067 days on it without a single confirmed sighting anywhere in the world, and was removed in November 2021 not because he was caught, but because the publicity had stopped working.
April 10th, 2001, 8:42 in the morning. A house in Scottsdale, Arizona blows apart. Firefighters find three bodies inside: Mary Fisher, 38, and her two children, Brittney, 12, and Bobby, 10. They are in their beds — and that is the first thing that doesn’t fit. People who die in house fires are found in hallways and near doors, in the postures of people trying to get out. The Fishers never moved. Underneath the house, the gas line had been tampered with so the building would go up hours later.
The fourth member of the family is Robert Fisher, 40, a technician at the Mayo Clinic who threads catheters into human hearts. The last confirmed image of him is a bank camera at 10:43 the previous night, four minutes from his own street, drawing out the daily maximum with his wife’s 4Runner parked behind him in the dark. He walks out of frame. After that, nothing. Nineteen years of searching never got better than that.
Twelve years earlier, police had already stood on his front lawn. Fisher had put two dogs together on the grass, gone inside, come back with a nine-millimetre pistol, and shot the neighbour’s dog from four feet away. Neighbours told police he had staged the fight because he wanted a reason to fire. No charge followed. His only recorded quote in his entire life is six words to a local reporter, about that dog.
Ten days after the fire, Mary’s Toyota 4Runner turned up a hundred miles northeast, in the Tonto National Forest — roughly three hundred yards from sovereign reservation land that state police couldn’t simply search. The family dog was there, alive and loose. The entire manhunt was built on the assumption the dog wouldn’t leave its master. At its peak: 150 officers, Scottsdale SWAT, bloodhounds, a cadaver dog, a helicopter, tear gas fired into caves. The largest wilderness search Arizona had seen since 1992. They found nothing. Two weeks in, a Forest Service officer said out loud what some had started to think — the car might be bait, and so might the dog.
Fourteen months later he went onto the Ten Most Wanted list. That list isn’t a verdict, it’s a billboard: the second criterion is whether nationwide publicity will help catch the man. There are only three ways off it — captured, killed, or charges dismissed. Every one means the case is over.
Then in November 2021 the Bureau removed him anyway, and gave the reason in writing: nearly twenty years of publicity had not produced his capture. His slot went to an MS-13 leader in Honduras. He’d been up there 7,067 days. The average is 316.
He is still wanted. The $100,000 is still there. The warrant has never been withdrawn. Only the poster is gone. Not captured. Not cleared. And there was a second line in that statement, stranger than the first: no evidence that Fisher has committed any other crime since.
