This is the true story of Dan Saunders — a broke, gambling-addicted bartender in a small Australian country town who put his card into an ATM at midnight, watched it hand him money that didn’t exist, and spent the next four and a half months pulling $1.6 million out of one of the biggest banks in Australia. He never hacked anything. He never stole a card. He never lied to a single person.

Wangaratta, Victoria, 2011. A rainy Tuesday night. Dan is 29, has three dollars in savings and a credit card two thousand in the red. He tries to move $200 from his credit card to his savings. The screen flashes: transaction cancelled. The card pops out. He tries again, asks for $200 in cash — and the machine gives it to him.

Two nights later he works out what actually happened. The money never came off his credit card. It never came from anywhere. And the bug had rules: the machine only opened between midnight and three in the morning, when the bank’s system dropped into offline mode. The cash slot capped at a thousand dollars a day — but the transfer between his own accounts had almost no limit at all. Up to $999,000 in a single press.

So he’d top the account up at the ATM at night, then walk into a branch during the day and ask a teller for twenty, fifty, a hundred thousand in cash. And they’d count it out, because on their screen the money was really there.

What he did with it is the part that makes this story. Handed an unlimited money machine, a normal person pays off their debts and buys a house. Dan was a gambler — so he gambled, and inside a month he was sixty thousand down. The glitch hadn’t made him rich. It had handed his addiction an unlimited budget.

And there was a trap inside it. About 24 hours after each transfer the bank’s system would reverse it, and his balance would drop back into the red — so every single night, in whatever city he was in, he had to slip away from whatever was happening and walk to an ATM to top it back up. Miss one night and it was over. He wasn’t living off free money. He’d found a second job that ran from midnight to 3 a.m., seven nights a week, that he could never take a night off from.

By then his gambling had already cost him his job and his fiancée in a single morning. With nothing left, he stopped trying to get rich and started spending like a man who already was: tailored suits, bodyguards, limousines, Louis Vuitton duffel bags to carry the cash because nothing smaller would hold it. Buying drinks for 250 people in one club. Renting a mansion and filling it with backpackers he collected off the street. An $80,000 private jet to a private island near Bali with eleven friends.

And the most audacious thing he ever did with the money was throw a party. His favourite bar in Melbourne happened to sit around the corner from the head office of the National Australia Bank — the bank he was robbing every night. So they printed flyers for a staff party with free drinks and stuck them up inside the NAB building itself. Between four and six hundred bank employees showed up. Dan paid for all of it. Then one of his friends stood on a table and toasted the room: we’d just like to thank the NAB, they’ve been really good to us this year.

Over the whole run, the bank called him somewhere between seventy and a hundred times — every single time to check that the man quietly robbing them was happy with his purchases.
