It’s my second day in Alaska, and these are some of the outcuts from my time exploring Mountain View, Anchorage — a neighborhood with a long-standing reputation for crime.

Recent estimates put Mountain View’s overall crime level well above the national average, with particularly elevated rates of assault, theft and vehicle theft. One 2026 analysis ranks its overall crime index 43% above the U.S. average and higher than most other Anchorage neighborhoods.

But statistics never tell the whole story. I came here to walk the streets, meet the people and see the neighborhood for myself.
