Nestled along the banks of the famous Peace River in Arcadia, Florida, Peace River Campground has become a bucket-list destination for fossil hunters from around the world. Today, my son @TrisMustList and I spent three hours digging, sifting, and searching through the river’s ancient sediments in hopes of uncovering prehistoric treasures hidden beneath the mud. Millions of years ago, this entire area was covered by a shallow sea, leaving behind an incredible collection of fossils that continue to wash out of the riverbanks today. Fossil hunters regularly discover shark teeth from species such as Bull Sharks, Tiger Sharks, Lemon Sharks, Sand Tiger Sharks, and even the legendary Megalodon. Along with shark teeth, it’s also possible to find fossilized bones, stingray plates, whale remains, and other marine fossils dating back millions of years. Every scoop of gravel holds the possibility of uncovering a piece of Florida’s prehistoric past, making the Peace River one of the most exciting fossil-hunting locations in North America.
