This is the true story of Foutanga Babani Sissoko — a man from a tiny village in Mali who never spent a day in school, never learned to read or write, and between 1995 and 1998 walked the biggest Islamic bank in the world out of $242 million using nothing but a magic trick in a dark room.

Summer 1995, the head office of Dubai Islamic Bank. A senior executive watches a man from Mali stack cash on a table. The man asks him to lock the door and turn out the lights. He speaks a few words in a language the executive doesn’t understand. When the lights come back on, there’s roughly twice as much money on the desk as there was a minute ago. The executive runs the daily operations of a major international bank. By the end of that meeting, he is a believer.

It began with the most ordinary request imaginable: a car loan. The manager, Mohammed Ayoub, approved it — and Sissoko invited him home for dinner. Over the meal he told Ayoub he could summon jinn, spirits that could take a pile of money and double it. He hadn’t picked Ayoub by accident. He’d found the one thing this man would never think to doubt: his faith. Come back again, Sissoko told him. And bring some cash.

What followed was a simple swap in the dark — lights, smoke, voices, and a bigger pile of cash at the end. A street magician could do it in a shopping mall. But to Ayoub it felt like proof that God had chosen him. That Monday he went back to work and made the first transfer of the bank’s money into Sissoko’s account, certain it would come back doubled.

It was the first of 183.

Ayoub didn’t need to break into the bank’s system — he was the bank’s system. Every wire looked like ordinary business signed off by a trusted executive. And whenever doubt crept in, Sissoko fed him fear: the spirits were powerful and impatient, and cutting them off could bring disaster down on his family.

On the other side of the world, Sissoko spent the fortune faster than almost anyone in history — and gave most of it away. Rolls-Royces handed to near-strangers as tips. Cheques handed out to strangers at JFK airport. Gold, cars and houses for the griot musicians of Mali. A hospital, schools and an airfield for the village where he was born. And his own airline, Air Dabia, with a fleet of aircraft that eventually included a Boeing 747 — owned by a man who grew up in a village with no paved road.

What finally caught him wasn’t a quarter of a billion dollars. It was an attempt to buy two Vietnam-era Huey helicopters and a $30,000 bribe offered to a US customs officer who refused to take it. He was arrested in Geneva, extradited to Florida, and sentenced to 43 days — with his fine and legal costs paid, unknowingly, by the very bank he was robbing.

Then he flew home to Mali, where he was welcomed as a hero, elected to the National Assembly, and spent twelve years as a lawmaker with full parliamentary immunity. The banker who never kept a dollar for himself went to prison. The man who couldn’t read never did.
