On September 30th, 2026, flydubai Flight FZ1073 left Dubai for Tel Aviv with 174 passengers on board — 27 of them children. Two hours into the flight, near the Jordanian border, the Boeing 737 MAX 8 dropped out of the sky. Flight-tracking data shows it falling more than fourteen thousand feet in under thirty seconds, at times losing over five hundred feet every second. At the bottom of the dive there was nothing below it but desert.
After September 11th, 2001, airlines rebuilt one thing above everything else: the cockpit door. Reinforced, bulletproof, locked from the inside, impossible to breach from the cabin. For more than twenty years the entire design rested on a single assumption — that the danger would always be on the other side of it.
On FZ1073 the danger was already inside. According to passengers and Israeli officials, the first officer — an Omani national who had been with flydubai less than a year — attacked the captain. The door built to protect the flight deck was now the only thing keeping help out, and the people in the cabin had no way to open it.
The man who opened it was the captain himself. Smit Machchhar, 39, from Mumbai, with close to ten thousand flight hours, had just been stabbed — and still reached the lock before collapsing in the doorway. A dentist on board knelt down and began treating his wounds while passengers rushed the cockpit and pinned the first officer down, tying him with in-flight headphones from the seat pockets.
For a few seconds after that, nobody was flying the aircraft. Passenger Yaniv Hayun, a plumber, says he got into the seat, took the controls and pulled back. Asked later by Israel’s prime minister where he learned to do that, he answered: “You see it on Mayday, Mr. Prime Minister.” The TV series about plane crashes.
Then came the detail that decides this whole story. Sitting in the cabin that morning were two off-duty flydubai pilots — men who fly this exact aircraft for a living, simply catching a ride. They took the seats. At the speed the aircraft was falling, the desert was less than a minute away.
The rudder had been torn apart during the dive. The transponder went from 7700 to 7500 — unlawful interference — so from the ground it looked like a hijacking in progress, and Israel scrambled fighter jets. An hour and a half later, with a damaged tail and no way to know what else might fail, the 737 landed at Tabuk in north-western Saudi Arabia. Every single person on board survived.
The question of why is still open. Israeli officials have called it an attempted terror attack; no group has claimed responsibility and the man has not been charged. flydubai still describes it only as an altercation in the flight deck. Investigators in the UAE and Israel are working on whether it was planned and whether anyone else was involved — and nobody has yet explained how a knife got into that cockpit at all.
The answer is probably sitting inside one small orange box.
