This is the true story of Mehran Karimi Nasseri — “Sir Alfred” — the Iranian man who lived inside Terminal 1 of Paris Charles de Gaulle Airport from 1988 to 2006. No rent. No bills. No passport. And no way, under French law, for anyone to make him leave.
August 1988. A man with no documents is turned away at London Heathrow and flown back to Paris. France can’t let him in. No airline will take him. And his paperwork lists no home country at all. So he puts his suitcase down next to a red bench in the departures hall — and stays.
Within a few years, the airport became his home. The McDonald’s staff knew his order. The cleaners worked around his bench. Strangers mailed him cash from all over Europe. A doctor became his physician and his post office. A human rights lawyer spent years fighting for free to get him papers.
Then the doors started opening. Belgium agreed to take him in 1995. France offered him residency in 1999. And every time, the man who was supposedly trapped in the airport said no.
In 2003, Steven Spielberg’s DreamWorks reportedly paid him around a quarter of a million dollars for the rights to his life story — for a Tom Hanks film that never told it. So how does a man with no country end up rent-free, famous and paid by Hollywood — and why did he refuse every chance to leave?
