After watching Canada get destroyed 3-0 by Morocco in the World Cup, I left the crowd in Rio and hit the streets with no real plan. That’s when I met two local artists selling their merchandise on the sidewalk. They were hustling, creating, and trying to make a living, so I invited them to lunch. We didn’t speak the same language, but with my limited Spanish—and their Portuguese—we somehow managed to understand each other for the most part. Like I always say in Rio, everybody eats. What started as a disappointing day for Canada turned into a memorable afternoon with complete strangers.
