I’m in Dandong, the Chinese city where North Korea is just meters away. Standing on the river’s edge, you can literally see into another country—lights flickering on in distant buildings, silhouettes moving across the skyline, all with your own eyes. It’s one of the only places in the world where North Korea feels this close, this visible. But Dandong isn’t just about the view—this city is filled with stories. From North Korean defectors to restaurants, bars, and even souvenirs like North Korean currency and cigarettes, traces of the isolated nation are everywhere you look.
