I started my day in Tiananmen Square, Beijing — huge, loud, crowds of people lined up everywhere, but somehow I still felt alone. I grab a taxi to leave, everything seems normal… until right before we arrive, he turns to me and says 400 yuan, like $80 Canadian, for a short 7.5 km ride. That’s when I realize he’s trying to hustle me… we argue back and forth using a translator. I end up paying half (still too much). I arrive at the dirt market — old things everywhere, stories in every corner, some real, lots fake… you never really know. After that I just start walking home, no plan. Then a tiny car is waiting by the park, and a man gestures for me. We don’t speak the same language, yet we understand each other. As I get out of his car, I notice he has one smaller leg. Something about that moment hits me. I just start thinking about life… how hard it can be. I get a little emotional. Life is not easy for everyone, all the time.
Thanks for watching.
