I decided I didn’t want to just visit the Great Wall of China once—I wanted to experience it more slowly. So I based myself in a nearby city, a place most tourists simply pass through without a second thought. Today, on my day off, I’m stepping away from the usual sights to wander its streets, talk to strangers, and explore what life here is really like.
